As a mom to a seven-year-old, I can understand that banning kids from restaurants won't do anyone any good. My frustration is with the families who let their kids behave like wild things in a restaurant or any public place. I think these families should stay home if their kids can't behave like humans. Even my seven-year-old daughter is frustrated when she has to be seated in the 'family' section of restaurants and hear screaming kids. I think a restaurant has the right to ask a family to remove their child or children who can't behave. If their child gets bored, the family can bring books or toys to help them get over their boredom. Or better yet--eat at home.

The converse is true too - too cold, that is! Some restaurants make the exact opposite, but just as serious, mistake. They keep the restaurant somewhere between igloo and deep freeze.

We have asked about this, and the answer we have received most often is that they keep the temps low because it is so hot in the kitchen and it is for the comfort of the employees. HMMM... maybe they should think about who they are in business to serve - should it be their employees? or their customers?

Granted, the employees should not be subjected to overheated working conditions, but additional ventilation and/or AC in the kitchen could address that. But leaving your customers to shiver and have their (presumably) once-hot food go cold in the north wind blowing through the dining room is not a good thing.

Come on, restaurant owners - let's have some common sense here. ...please???

Thanks so much for this opportunity to share my opinion. I have often struggled with family outings to restaurants knowing that little or nothing would appeal to my 7 1/2 year old daughter who does not like hotdogs, hamburgers, pizza or macaroni and cheese. I wonder how we ever actually grew up to tell the tale!
Anyhow, my young one loves going out to eat with her grandparents and usually wants to have what they are having. My suggestion to restaurants on behalf of my own child would be to offer much of what the usual adult meals offer but in smaller portions.
I think it would be very cost effective for restaurants to offer this feature. I could imagine a sample plate- kids sized of course for first time visits with a corresponding placemat/ coloring page that features the menu items with a bonus interactive 'poll' or 'vote' on which items the child liked best (that would help me to remember what she liked, where we were, how much she ate of it, etc..)
Just my thoughts!
